Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID) is a means for storing data on multiple hard disks, then linking the disks so that the operating system on your server views them as a single entity. We offer RAID-1 with our Windows dedicated server hosting.

This RAID method of data storage is known as mirroring. Data is written to at least two disks, which offers a high degree of data security, but incurs a slight performance decrease due to capturing data on two disks.

SSL Security

SSL stands for Secure Socket Layer. It might sound complex, but it's really not. SSL Certificates validate your website's identity, and encrypt the information visitors send to, or receive from, your site. This keeps thieves from spying on any exchange between you and your shoppers.

When you have an SSL Certificate protecting your website, your customers can rest assured that the information they enter on any secured page is private and can't be viewed by cyber crooks. Metropolitan Host makes it easy to install your certificate and secure your server

Metropolitan Host SSL Certificates inspire trust and show visitors that you value their privacy. An SSL Cert protects your customers' sensitive information such as their name, address, password, or credit card number by encrypting the data during transmission from their computer to your web server. SSL is the standard for web security, and a Server Certificate is required by most merchant account services – you'll need one if you plan to accept credit cards on your website.

How you build your website is entirely up to you. In fact, most basic secure websites can be hand-coded using HTML.

When a visitor enters an SSL-protected page on your website, their browser bar displays a padlock icon and the https:// prefix in the URL address. While most Internet users know to look for those SSL indicators, you can also add a site seal to your website to show visitors your site is verified and secured. Visitors can click the seal to view your certificate's status and details, seeing for themselves that it's safe to send sensitive information to your website. Metropolitan host’s Premium EV SSL Certificate involves the most extensive vetting process. We verify the control of the domain and legitimacy of your company by validating the legal name, address, phone number and other business information. The process takes about 30 days, but we've got you covered during that time. EV SSL Certs come with a free Standard SSL to use during the vetting process, so you can keep your transactions secure while you wait.

Standard SSLs (DV) usually take 5 minutes or less. Deluxe SSLs (OV) take 3-5 business days, as we’re validating not just domain ownership but also the existence of the organization or business on the SSL application. In both cases, you can shorten your wait by making sure the domain contact information listed in the WhoIs is up-to-date.

For Premium (EV) certificates, there is an extensive vetting process that starts with an in-depth application. Before you start, pull together details about your business, such as registration number, incorporation or registration agent and any relevant jurisdiction information.

A Wildcard SSL Cert protects your primary domain, and an unlimited number of its subdomains. For example, a single Wildcard Certificate can secure both www.coolexample.com and blog.coolexample.com.

Wildcard Certificates secure the common name and all subdomains at the level you specify when you submit your SSL request.

Depending on how your website is configured, you might want to use something other than a single-domain SSL certificate.

  • Wildcard SSLs cover all of a domain name’s subdomains. For example, you can secure *.coolexample.com, which would cover shop.coolexample.com, www.coolexample.com and any other subdomains.
  • UCC SSLs can cover multiple subdomains, unique domain names and websites. For example, you can secure www.coolexample.com, mail.coolexample.com and www.awesomeexample.com.

Code Signing Certificates

With increasingly active content on the internet, end users require a method of verifying the legitimacy of downloadable web content.

Code signing is a digital signature placed on software and other executable files and scripts. Code signatures prove the identity of software authors and validates that the software hasn't been tampered with since its original distribution.

Code signs don't alter the software – it's just an added layer of assurance for your end users.

When software is purchased from a store, it's easy to tell who published the software – and if the package was tampered with. Unfortunately, these factors aren't as obvious when software is purchased online. As a result, end users take on a certain amount of risk when downloading Java applets, plugins, Microsoft® ActiveX® controls, and other executables over the Internet.

Code Signing Certificates help inspire the same level of trust in your software that customers would have if they purchased your software in a store.

Content publishers can digitally sign software components, macros, firmware images, virus updates, configuration files or other types of content for secure delivery over the Internet or other mechanisms.

Code signing is particularly important when the source of a given piece of code might not be obvious – for example Active X controls, Java applets, and other active web scripting codes.

Most web users understand the potential risks involved with downloading content from the internet. It's important your end users can trust the code you publish on the internet. Code Signing Certificates help confirm software security and assurance with your customers.

Newer operating systems and internet browsers are often set to higher online security levels, which often require signed content. For example, Internet Explorer® uses Authenticode® technology to identify the publisher of signed software and verify that it hasn't been tampered with.

When a code signed file is downloaded from a website, the certificate is extracted from the file. The browser cross-checks this information with an internal list of certificate authorities, and then verifies the signature in the certificate.

If the signed software is tampered with in any way, the digital signature breaks and alerts customers that the code has been altered and is not trustworthy.

When someone attempts to download or run unsigned code, their browser attempts to validate the security of the downloaded content. A security warning pops up or the Web page content fails to load, depending on the browser security settings. These warnings create suspicion and confusion for the user.

Digitally signing code prevents unnecessary warning dialogues when end users attempt to run the signed application or executable file.

After you purchase a Code Signing Certificate, you need to provide a certificate signing request (CSR) from the computer that is signing the code. Depending on the use of the certificate, you can create the CSR automatically, or you can use a tool like OpenSSL to generate the CSR.

After you submit your request, we verify the company information you supplied. The Registration Authority (RA) might contact you to provide additional information, if required. You can monitor the validation process through your account.

Once the Code Signing Certificate is issued, we'll send you an email with a link to download and install the certificate file and any associated intermediate certificates.

You can even time-stamp your signature block using Authenticode to show the validity of your certificate at the time the code was signed.
